Motivational interviewing is beginning to gain popularity within the school counseling community, but it can feel like a daunting task to incorporate into one’s practice. This 2 hour presentation and training is designed to give an overview to those people interested in incorporating MI in the school setting, as well as starting to practice what conversations through the spirit of MI might look like. Attendees will leave this session with a better understanding of what MI is and how to begin to incorporate it with their own practice. Who Can Attend?
Anyone who works with school-aged kids, in or outside of schools! Early Childhood Education staff are welcome to attend as well!

What this course includes:
Understand what OARS/EARS stands for and how it is applicable when using MI
Identify the differences between sustain talk and change talk
Define what evocation is and why it is one of the most important aspects of MI
Identify the righting reflex and why it can be detrimental when working with a student
Be able to determining the difference between affirmation and acceptance
Begin to identify how MI could work in conjunction with other theories.

Speaker Bio:
Brian Linhart
Brian Linhart is a school counselor at Buffalo Grove HS (IL) and an adjunct faculty member at National-Louis University (IL). He has 12 years of counseling experience, and 19 in the field of education. He uses Motivational Interviewing with a wide array of students and situations. He has presented at the American School Counselor Association’s conference, the Illinois School Counselor Association’s conference, led a training session with the student support services department at Minneapolis School District (MN). Brian also runs a newsletter titled “Motivational Interviewing in Schools” that shares resources, information, and best practices related to using Motivational Interviewing in the educational setting. Currently completing a doctoral study - analyzing the correlation between the use of Motivational Interviewing in a school counseling setting with the academic performance of academically at-risk high school students.

This workshop is approved by NAADAC and NBCC. You must complete the workshop and have a passing score on your quiz to access a certificate. Your licensure board may accept CE from these accreditation bodies. We encourage you to check! Regardless, you will be provided with a certificate of completion at workshop completion. You may request additional documentation that includes the 1-hour timeframe of the workshop, objectives, and trainer bio for submission to your licensure board.
