In this engaging training, we’ll first briefly explore the nuances of coaching, particularly focusing on the distinction between credentialed coaching and other coaching practices. We will delve into how this coaching approach builds upon the foundation of Motivational Interviewing (MI) theory and methods.
Using insights from the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and the International Coaching Federation (ICF), we will illustrate how the MI spirit and skills are seamlessly integrated into the scope of effective coaching practices. We’ll examine how MI in coaching supports the coach’s role of partnering with people to facilitate growth rather than providing treatment. We’ll also look at how we use reflective listening and powerful questioning in MI-consistent coaching. To wrap up, we’ll highlight the most crucial attitude and skill of MI-consistent coaching: empathic reflective listening. We will showcase real-life examples of how coaches foster change talk (not sustain talk) and why this aspect is vital for successful coaching outcomes.
